Marketing Chair's Message

Tim Renaut

Hello again from the Marketing Committee! Over the past year, we have focused on practical, accessible CFAA content through the CFAA Journal, the CFAA Fire Alarm Technicians Podcast and outreach to technicians, engineers, authorities having jurisdiction, building owners and other industry partners.

The podcast continues to grow. By spring 2026, average downloads had risen approximately 70% year over year to about 1,000 per month. Code-change episodes—particularly Ontario Building Code and Ontario Fire Code updates—and the troubleshooting series have drawn the most interest. Ontario represents more than 35% of downloads, followed by Alberta at about 10%, Quebec at 9% and British Columbia at 7%. These results help guide our content while reinforcing the need to serve listeners across Canada.

Podcast production remains strong, with bookings now extending into March 2027. In September, we recorded a live BC FireCon discussion on artificial intelligence in fire protection. It examined practical uses in design, estimating, reporting, detection and predictive maintenance, while emphasizing code acceptance, validation, cybersecurity, liability and qualified human oversight.

Next, we will continue to prioritize code and standards changes, hands-on troubleshooting and perspectives from across Canada. Planned themes include Canadian and U.S. code comparisons, emerging technology and the how to talk to AHJ’s, Engineers and Owners.

The CFAA Journal remains an important industry communication channel, and its articles can complement podcast interviews by giving contributors another way to share useful knowledge. We welcome practical submissions on code and standards changes, field troubleshooting, reporting, education and issues affecting building owners and authorities having jurisdiction. A rough idea is enough to begin—the committee can help develop it for publication.

The marketing mailbox (marketing@cfaa.ca) continues to receive guest suggestions, article ideas and member questions. CFAA’s new website also offers more ways to connect.

How can you help? Suggest a guest, volunteer for an episode, submit a Journal article, share CFAA content or identify technical questions that deserve clearer national discussion. Our strongest content comes from members who share what they have learned in the field. Contact us at marketing@cfaa.ca, and we will help turn your idea into a practical contribution.
